UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

UW economist Rob Godby discussed with The Wisconsin State Journal the potential for utility rate hikes for Wisconsin residents with the proposed merger of Arch Coal and Peabody coal mines in Wyoming. The mines produce 60 percent of coal shipped to Wisconsin for use by that state’s power utilities.

Godby also spoke with The Gillette News Record about several shareholders who allege Cloud Peak Energy intentionally undervalued assets during its bankruptcy filing.

The Laramie Boomerang noted that key legislative committee members discussed funding proposals to construct a new facility for the Lab School on campus. The public Lab School is used as a training facility for UW education students.

UW Police Chief Mike Samp told The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) that 18 reports of sexual assault were made, down slightly from the previous school year.

Athletic Business reported that the future of UW’s swimming and diving programs could depend on whether the school is able to convince state legislators to help finance facility renovations.

Sherrill Smith will begin duties as the new dean of the Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing in the UW College of Health Sciences Aug. 1, according to The CS-T.

The Boomerang outlined UW’s capital construction requests to the Wyoming Legislature for the 2020 fiscal year.

Criminal justice Assistant Professor Clair White said that residents of Baltimore’s high-crime areas have significantly more health problems than do those who live in low-crime districts, reported Crime Report. White was among speakers at an annual symposium on evidence-based crime policy in the Maryland city.

Oil City profiled UW graduate Ryan Prouty, a NASA engineer, who grew up in Casper. She was back in her hometown participating in a space camp for area youth.

Laramie Live noted that Matt Kauffman, who leads the Wyoming Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit at UW, received the Conservationist of the Year Award from the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.

Visible on UW’s homepage is an in-depth look at statistics regarding many aspects of the university in a newly refreshed and updated Brown and Gold Report. UW’s media release announcing the site was published by Sheridan Media.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle noted that UW’s wildlife migration research was cited during a public meeting in Rock Springs to discuss wildlife corridors in the state. Gov. Mark Gordon recently created the Big Game Migration Advisory Group to engage in public discussions.

Nearly 150 people attended five public chronic wasting disease listening sessions, according to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. UW’s Ruckelshaus Institute/Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources, and Wyoming Game and Fish hosted the statewide sessions.

UW’s Chris Henry, of Laramie, was named to the Track & Field/Cross Country Google Cloud Academic All-America first team, reported The CS-T. He has a 4.0 GPA in molecular biology and physiology.

SweetwaterNOW reported that former volleyball player Reed Copeland and basketball guard Clara Tapia will represent UW as the 2019 nominees for NCAA Woman of the Year.

UW head men’s basketball Coach Allen Edwards talked with Wyoming Public Radio about Justin James’ journey to the NBA. James was selected 40th overall by the Sacramento Kings.
