UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

The Laramie Boomerang reported that the UW Board of Trustees last week approved a financial aid package, beginning in the fall of 2020, that will offer significantly more merit- and need-based aid to Wyoming students.

The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) was among media outlets noting that the UW Board of Trustees last week detailed plans to find and hire the next president. Trustees hope to have a new president in place by July 1, 2020.

UW Acting President Neil Theobald outlined his vision/goals during his first Board of Trustees meeting last week, according to The Boomerang. Retention and graduation are among Theobald’s priorities.

The CS-T profiled Lt. Gen. Sam Phillips, one of three known UW graduates to work on the Apollo space missions. Phillips, the most prominent of the UW graduates, was a four-star Air Force general who led the Apollo program for several years, culminating in Neil Armstrong’s walk on the moon 50 years ago.

UW-led research on why ice is sliding toward the edges of the Greenland Ice Sheet was published on the National Science Foundation website.

The Boomerang reported that the UW Housing Task Force has targeted the parking lot between 10th and 11th Streets off of Grand Avenue as the site for a parking garage. The task force also indicated that construction of new residence halls on the site where Wyo Hall is located could begin early next year.

UW economist Rob Godby was interviewed by The CS-T for an article focused on the delayed study forecasting the future of coal plans in Wyoming. The study considers how changes to energy regulations, prices and technology could affect ratepayers’ electricity prices. He also was interviewed for High Country News for an article, titled “With coal in free-fall, Wyoming faces an uncertain future.”

Godby told Joint Revenue Committee members that the state could expect at least a 25 percent decline in coal production by 2025, noted a CS-T article on how lawmakers are dealing with budget cuts. Wyoming will operate under its smallest budget in nearly two decades for 2019-2020. He commented to Wyoming Public Radio’s story on “A Watershed Year: Companies Begin To Adapt As Powder River Basin Restructures,” and also gave perspective in The CS-T’s article on the timeline since mining company Blackjewell declared bankruptcy.

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is collaborating with UW’s Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit to capture, collar and monitor survival of bighorn sheep lambs in the Jackson and Dubois areas.

UW’s King Air research aircraft will be used in Wisconsin to study how vegetation and the Earth’s surface affect the atmosphere, and vice versa, according to Wisconsin Public Radio. The University of Wisconsin is leading the research project.

KGAB Radio reported that UW Chef Debe Honibah Brady received the silver award for her culinary creation at the National Association of College and University Food Services National Culinary Challenge in Denver.

UW’s release announcing the UW Alumni Association’s Member Appreciation Day scheduled this fall was published on the Sheridan Media website.

The CS-T reported that the Golf Coaches Association of America honored the UW men’s golf team as a 2018-19 All-Academic team. It was the 10th year in a row the program has been recognized for excellence in the classroom.

A record 102 UW student-athletes from winter and spring sports received Academic All-Mountain West Conference honors during the 2018-19 academic year, noted Wyo 4News.
