UW in the News

September 3, 2019

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

NBC News featured “The Bearded Lady Project: Challenging the Face of Science,” a photo exhibition of about 40 female paleontologists in the field and in the lab posing with beards on their faces. Ellen Currano, a UW associate professor of paleobotany, co-founded “The Bearded Lady Project.”

UW economist Rob Godby told The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) that prospects for Wyoming coal miners returning to their jobs look grim after a judge ruled that bankrupt coal operator Blackjewel could proceed with the sale of a West Virginia coal mine separately from the sale of the Eagle Butte and Belle Ayr mines in the Powder River Basin. Godby also was quoted by Coal Zoom and The Laramie Boomerang in related articles. Coal Zoom mentioned UW’s ongoing coal research in another article.

WyoFile profiled a crew composed of academics, scientists, educators and artists from UW who followed the path of explorer John Wesley Powell’s expedition. The Sesquicentennial Colorado River Exploring Expedition was launched to honor the 150th anniversary of Powell’s adventures. The Salt Lake Tribune republished the article.

The age of a Columbian mammoth found at Buffalo Bill Reservoir last year may never be known, UW anthropology Professor Todd Surovell told The Powell Tribune.

The CS-T reported that the UW Board of Trustees recently approved changes to admissions requirements, setting new minimum score requirements on college entrance exams for students to be admitted. Diverse Issues in Higher Education published a similar article.

Samantha Dwinnell, a UW research scientist, was featured in The Jackson Hole News and Guide. She discussed her research on how sagebrush nutrients are essentially unavailable to deer whose habitat is around Wyoming oil and gas pads. She said that explains the decline in deer in the Pinedale Anticline. goHUNT published a similar article.

interviewed Richard Horner, UW School of Energy Resources deputy director, about the research institution’s validation of the New York-based Clean Coal Technologies Inc.’s “Pristine” technology that removes the water from coal and converts it into a cleaner-burning fuel. The technology will be involved in the next stage field-testing program scheduled to start at a Gillette facility.

Barbara Rasco, UW College of Agriculture and Natural Resources dean, is among panelists at the “NAFTA 2.0: The U.S., Mexico and Canada Agreement” discussion in Casper later this month, reported High Plains Journal. UW Associate Vice Provost Anne Alexander will moderate the panel discussion.

ABC News interviewed a Colorado couple who fought off a bear in their home. The bear was later captured, destroyed and remains sent to UW’s Forensics Lab for analysis to confirm that the bear was from the couple’s attack. London’s Daily Mail, Huffington Post and The Denver Post published similar articles.

Research from Charles Ksir, UW professor emeritus of psychology, was cited to debunk Fox News commentator Tucker Carlson’s claim that marijuana use is linked to mass shootings in America, reported Peacock Panache, a website that focuses on civil rights, LGBTQ activism, church/state issues, women’s rights and politics. Ksir’s study is among research that notes there is a correlation between violence and those who use cannabis, but no causation link has been established between the two.

The Boomerang reported that the Laramie City Council received emissions data completed by UW students. The results were from a spring sustainability capstone course and through UW senior Xanthe Yorke’s summer internship in UW’s Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources.

Sheridan Media published several UW releases: UW Associate Professor Katie Li-Oakey received a Department of Energy grant to study liquid separation mechanisms using smart materials; UW Assistant Professor Jerod Merkle’s study on how big-game animals know where to migrate across the vast Wyoming landscape each year; Chad Baldwin, UW associate vice president for communications and marketing, discussed the university and the Wyoming Business Council’s efforts launching a new network to connect entrepreneurs and mentors and the WyoHackathon; a UW WWAMI medical student will practice in Sheridan; and the first UW presidential search listening session has been scheduled.

The Boomerang reported that UW English Professor Susan Aronstein provided cinema feedback to Laramie Main Street Alliance officials about the shuttered Wyo Theater building. An anonymous resident recently donated the building to the alliance.

WyoSports reported that former UW quarterback Nick Smith was named the 2018-19 Mountain West Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
