UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

UW officials, last week, formally apologized to the Black 14 football players who were dismissed from the Cowboys team for wanting to protest racial injustice, reported The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T), Laramie Boomerang and Inside Higher Ed. The Boomerang published an editorial supporting UW’s decision. The CS-T also covered a halftime ceremony honoring the players.

The Washington Post published an Associated Press article about UW events commemorating the 50th anniversary of the dismissal of the Black 14 football players. Also publishing the article were Business Breaking News, Tacoma’s The News Tribune, The Salt Lake Tribune, Black America Web, London’s Daily Mail and CBS 19 News in Charlottesville, Va.

UW economist Rob Godby was interviewed by Voice of America, the largest U.S. international broadcaster. Godby discussed the Blackjewel mining company and future of Wyoming’s coal and Wyoming legislators’ attempts to ward off the closing of the Kemmerer mine. Godby also spoke with The Wall Street Journal and The Chicago Tribune about the recent closings of Powder River Basin coal mines and the reality that is facing Wyoming’s energy future. He was interviewed for a CS-T piece on the declining pace of coal. Godby’s interviews also were republished in The New Delhi Times, Israel’s Haaretz website, Breitbart and Coal Zoom.

In a CS-T article published by Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis, Godby was interviewed for a story focusing on the retirement of multiple Wyoming coal-fired power plants that could lead to hefty cost savings.

Smithsonian profiled the research work on how to tell a bird’s age by its song from UW zoology and physiology instructors Corey Tarwater and Patrick Kelley.

Pharmacy students from UW and Howard University took part in the Health Equity Leadership Program, caring for patients in rural and city communities that are vastly different from their home university states. The feature was published in Pharmacy Times.

Wyoming Public Radio noted the ribbon-cutting ceremony last week for UW’s new $105 million Engineering Education and Research Building, noting its substantial technology features. The Boomerang published a similar article.

Laramie city officials urged UW to limit or avoid entirely any closures of 15th Street during the construction of new residence halls along the west side of the street, The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reported. Wind River Radio Network published a similar article on construction of new facilities.

UW and Native American partnerships are the focus of the fall 2019 edition of UWyo Magazine, noted Mirage News, Native Business Magazine and Sheridan Media.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reported that Wyoming PBS, in cooperation with UW’s American Heritage Center, livestreamed a panel discussion with nine members of the Black 14 last week on campus.

UW is No. 2, and No. 5 overall, among the nation’s land-grant universities in the Wall Street Journal’s 2020 “Is Your College Worth the Cost?” rankings list, reported KGAB Radio.

The Boomerang previewed the Black 14 players’ visit to the UW campus last week.

101.9 King FM Radio in Cheyenne noted that UW alumnus Bertine Bahige, an elementary school principal in Gillette, is featured in a video for the university’s new “The World Needs More Cowboys and So Does Wyoming” marketing campaign.

Michael Pishko, the dean of UW’s College of Engineering and Applied Science, is stepping down and will join the ranks of the college’s faculty, The CS-T reported.

The Rawlins Times noted that Memorial Hospital of Carbon County is collaborating with UW’s BRAND (Bachelors Reach for Accelerated Nursing Degree) Program. The program offers individuals who have a previous nonnursing baccalaureate degree the opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing within 15 months.

UW Professor Todd Surovell discussed with Wyoming Public Radio what he believes caused the extinction of mammoths.

Oil City News published UW’s release noting that a $1 million gift to the Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing will boost the delivery of psychiatric mental health nursing and integrated care through UW’s undergraduate and graduate programs. The McMurry Foundation presented the gift.

UW College of Law Professor George Mocsary argued the right to bear arms goes beyond where someone lives during a Second Amendment panel discussion at the University of Utah, The Deseret News reported.
