UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

Bloomberg noted that UW researchers are among scientists in a study using sensors to gauge the extent of greenhouse gas emissions from surging oil and natural gas production in the Permian Basin in West Texas and southwestern New Mexico. Environmental Defense Fund and Natural Gas Intelligence Shale Daily published similar articles.

UW graduated a record number of students last year, and the incoming freshman class is the second largest in school history, reported The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T). The San Francisco Chronicle, The Wyoming Tribune Eagle and Wyo4News published similar articles.

The CS-T interviewed UW economist Rob Godby in an article about PacifiCorp’s most recent wind energy plan that will revamp the future of Wyoming’s energy landscape. Godby also spoke with The Wyoming Tribune Eagle about the early retirement of some of Wyoming’s coal-fired power plants.

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) Program in the UW College of Business is ranked among the top 20 nationally, according to Great Value Colleges. UW is ranked No. 19 in the “Top 25 MBA Programs With No GMAT (graduate management admissions test) Requirement Online for 2020” survey.

The Laramie Boomerang covered UW Acting President Neil Theobald’s “State of the University” address. His goals include increasing the number of endowed faculty chairs; renovating nine buildings on campus; and improving graduation rates.

UW’s recent “Blockchain Stampede” was part of the College of Engineering and Applied Science’s WyoHackathon, reported Campus Technology and Becker’s Hospital Review. The event helped to highlight the state’s commitment to blockchain technology. UW graduate Caitlin Long, a member of the Wyoming Blockchain Task Force, was interviewed by The Traders Zone Network about the hackathon.

SweetwaterNOW noted that Western Wyoming Community College is partnering with the UW American Heritage Center’s Simpson Institute for Western Politics and Leadership to host “Breaking the Boom and Bust Cycle in Wyoming: Viewpoints from Southwest Wyoming” this week.

An article by UW Creative Writing Program Professor of Practice Joy Williams was published in The New Yorker.

UW law Professor George Mocsary discussed how a president could tackle gun violence through executive action. His comments were carried by The Trace, an independent, nonprofit news organization dedicated to expanding coverage of guns in the United States.

One News Page reported that UW student Corry Vetos is on Capitol Hill this week advocating for action to end global poverty. Vetos is part of the ONE Campaign, an international, nonpartisan, nonprofit advocacy and campaigning organization that fights extreme poverty and preventable disease worldwide.

The Powell Tribune published UW’s release announcing “The World Needs More Cowboys” campaign rally in Park County this week.

In a CS-T article published in The Buffalo Bulletin, UW Professor Jim King provided pros and cons as Wyoming lawmakers look at legislative redistricting.

The Berkshire Eagle, in Pittsfield, Mass., featured hometown resident Tony Gibson, one of UW’s Black 14 football players.

Finalists of the Casper Area Wyoming Technology Business Center’s (WTBC) Start-Up Challenge have been named, reported Oil City News. The WTBC is a business development program of UW.

The Powell Tribune published UW’s release noting the significant growth in the number of UW students studying abroad.

Linda Thunström, a UW economics assistant professor, discussed her research on “thoughts and prayers” in a Boomerang article.

The Boomerang also featured the UW Symphony Orchestra’s opening night performance scheduled this week.

UW graduate Kevin Rochlitz, from Powell, and the chief revenue officer for the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens, was featured in a front-page Boomerang article. Rochlitz received his undergraduate degree from the UW College of Business.

Wind River Radio Network published UW’s release announcing that UW’s College of Business and Central Wyoming College are partnering to support Wyoming’s entrepreneurial ecosystem with the launch of a new statewide education program called Entrepreneur Essentials.
