UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

Beth Williams, a UW professor who helped save the black-footed ferret from extinction and was one of the early pioneers who discovered chronic wasting disease, was featured by The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) in its ongoing series noting the 150th anniversary of women’s suffrage in Wyoming. Williams and her husband, Tom Thorne, also a UW professor, were killed in a car wreck 15 years ago.

UW geology and geophysics Professor Ken Sims was interviewed by La Voz about Yellowstone National Park’s magma chamber and the history of volcano-like eruptions in the park. Sims told La Voz, Colorado’s leading Hispanic-owned bilingual publication, that he does not expect a “super eruption” anytime soon.

The Crisis, the official publication of the NAACP, featured and profiled the Black 14 football players who were dismissed from the UW Cowboys football team 50 years ago.

UW economist Anne Alexander talked with Cowboy State Daily about the state’s economy, which continues to grow, but at a slower pace than in the past -- raising the question of whether a recession is in the near future.

WyoFile covered a panel discussion that focused on the lessons learned and the concerns about future coal troubles and how the state is prepared to deal with them during the recent Energy Law and Policy in the Rockies conference. UW economist Rob Godby moderated the panel discussion.

Godby was quoted in an article comparing the intake of tourism dollars between Wyoming and Montana. His comments were first published in The Billings Gazette and republished in The Ravalli Republic. NBC Montana published the article on its website.

UW’s recent release, which cited habitat improvements in the Laramie River intended to boost the brown trout fishery that also have benefited native nongame fish, was published on the Wyo4News website.

Medical Xpress and 7th Space published UW’s release on how the university’s psychologists analyzed language to help categorize human goals. UW Associate Professor Ben Wilkowski and members of his Emotion and Cognition Laboratory led the project.

The American Mathematical Society has accepted UW Professor Bryan Shader’s proposal for a Mathematics Research Community program. Science and Technology Research News published UW’s release detailing the proposal.

Oil City News published UW’s release noting “Laramie Weekend,” showcasing Laramie and UW’s history and nonfiction literary life of the city, was featured on C-SPAN programs last week.

UW College of Law Associate Professor Tara Righetti was interviewed by High Country News for an article focusing on a proposed hydroelectric project on the Little Colorado River that shows the trade-offs in transitioning from fossil fuels.

Boise State Public Radio interviewed UW religious studies Professor Paul Flesher for a segment about the decrease of the number of self-proclaimed Christians in the West.

Chad Baldwin, UW associate vice president for communications and marketing, spoke with Sheridan Media about a $15.8 million grant from the National Science Foundation that will be for the university’s new King Air research aircraft. The grant will be for instrumentation and other equipment.

Semiconductor Digest published UW’s release noting that new research shows the ability to detect light from ultraviolet to the infrared optical regimes using spin currents. UW Assistant Professor William Rice led the study.

UW is hosting a two-day “Women’s Suffrage on the Northern Plains” symposium this week, according to a university release published by Sheridan Media.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle noted that Tara Evans, UW’s general counsel, spoke during the Legislature’s recent Joint Judiciary Interim Committee meeting that focused on the new ombudsman position and amendments to the Public Records Act.

The CS-T interviewed Dan McCoy, UW’s outdoor recreation and tourism management degree coordinator, about the Pilot Hill project, which would protect the Casper aquifer, while making the land an even better outdoor recreation area.
