State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

UW Assistant Professor Catherine Wagner is part of an international team that has discovered how more than 700 species of fish have evolved in East Africa‘s Lake Victoria region over the past 150,000 years, according to The Wellston Journal.

Stock Daily Dish noted that UW researchers Michael Cheadle and Barbara John led a voyage to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean and discovered five previously unknown active hydrothermal vents and a completely new vent site.

UW economics Assistant Professor Linda Thunström and former UW instructor Shiri Noy published “The value of thoughts and prayers.” Their research was cited in The Times of Israel in an article, titled “Researchers measure the dollar value of ‘thoughts and prayers.’”

WyoFile reported that “The State of Equality,” a new documentary noting the women’s suffrage movement’s 150th anniversary, premiered on Wyoming PBS last week. Among the women interviewed is UW Professor Cathy Connolly, also a Wyoming state legislator. UW Professor Renee Laegreid was interviewed for a similar WyoFile piece.

UW law Professor Michael Duff commented in a Supply Chain Brain article on how UPS workers underreport accidents on the job for fear of retaliation from supervisors. The website focuses on “managing risk, aligning the supply chain with corporate planning, achieving competitive advantage, balancing customer demands with the need to control cost and improving the bottom line.”

Pharmacy Times noted that UW pharmacy Clinical Professor Jaime Hornecker presented a session, titled “Unique Strategies to Reduce Vaccine-Preventable Diseases,” during the recent American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Midyear Clinical Meeting Exhibition in Las Vegas.

The Casper Star-Tribune interviewed Christine Porter, a UW associate professor and the Wyoming Excellence Chair in Community and Public Health, about last week’s first-ever Conference on Forming a Wyoming Food Coalition and Action Agenda in Casper. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss ways that private and nonprofit sectors could collaborate to build a sustainable food system in Wyoming.

UW doctoral student Kelly Pearce’s research, indicating that river otters in Grand Teton National Park appear to exhibit unique behaviors unlike river otters in other riverine systems, was cited in a Jackson Hole News and Guide article.

The Newcastle Letter Journal covered UW’s marketing event, “The World Needs More Cowboys -- and So Does Wyoming,” at the local high school and a community reception.

Local UW students participated in the recent “Live Local, Work Local” career experience in Sweetwater County, according to a university release published by The Rocket Miner. The UW program provides students opportunities to live and work in Wyoming.

The Rawlins Times reported that local UW students Bryant Jerome and Dilpuneet Aidhy presented their research at the recent Materials Research Society fall conference in Boston.

Several UW Black 14 football players’ portraits were published in The Denver Post’s “The Year in Photos 2019” special edition. Staff photographer AAron Ontiveroz, a UW graduate, took the photographs.

Former UW trustee Mike Massie and UW Professor Renee Laegreid discussed the legacy of Wyoming’s Esther Hobart Morris, the first woman justice of the peace in the U.S., as part of the celebration for the 150th year of women’s suffrage in Cheyenne last week, according to The Wyoming Tribune Eagle.

Wyoming Public Radio reported that UW’s Energy Resources Council has launched its search for projects to develop carbon capture technology. Carbon Capture Journal published a similar article.

UW researchers collaborated with Washington State University scientists on a study that indicates when people learn that a charitable contribution they earmarked for a specific project was used for another cause, they feel betrayed. EurekAlert! published the original study.

Oil City News published UW’s media release announcing fall semester graduation events.

A new student teaching program, designed especially for rural schools, will be implemented through the UW College of Education, according to The Laramie Boomerang. The new piloted program places a student teacher in a district for a full academic year.

Hits 106 Radio and Oil City News published UW’s release announcing that the university’s fifth annual Giving Day surpassed all expectations, raising a record-breaking $1,609,870 in gifts and pledges from 1,110 donors.

Colorado’s ST+B Engineering and Laramie’s Coffey Engineering were hired as consultants for the Wyoming Hall project and parking garage, according to The Boomerang.

STG Radio in Jackson reported that the Wyoming Game and Fish Department conducted another round of bighorn sheep captures with UW researchers last weekend. The capture is part of a study investigating nutrition, disease and lamb survival in the Jackson herd.

The Gillette News Record noted that area high school students participated in the annual High School Art Intensive, hosted by the UW Department of Visual Arts.

The sports website 7220 published a profile on UW linebacker Logan Wilson, from Casper, who was selected second team All-American.
