UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

UW’s budget request for the 2021-22 biennium was discussed at the Legislature’s Joint Appropriations Committee meeting last week, reported The Laramie Boomerang. Legislators told UW officials they want more information about how an increase to the block grant would be spent.

The Gillette News Record published an article that noted legislators on the Joint Appropriations Committee seemed receptive to helping fund a $74.3 million renovation of War Memorial Stadium and a rebuild of Corbett Pool.

BizWire Express reported that UW is listed on Intelligent.com’s Top 35 Master’s in Online Teaching Degree Programs for 2020 and its Top 50 Master’s in Educational Leadership Degree Programs for 2020. UW is ranked No. 18 and No. 4, respectively. Intelligent.com offers curated guides that include the best degree programs as well as information about financial aid, internships and study strategies.

The Jackson Hole News and Guide interviewed UW economist Rob Godby for an article on how Teton County leads the nation in per capita income.

Godby was quoted in an S&P Global Platts article, titled “U.S. Coal Sector Remains in Rough Shape Into the 2020s After Decade of Decline.”

The Sheridan Press interviewed UW graduate student Lindsay Martinez for a story on the study of moose in the Bighorn Mountains. Martinez is working with Wyoming Game and Fish Department researchers to study the demography of moose in the Bighorns.

UW Associate Professor Kevin Monteith recently helped collect ultrasound data from radio-collared deer near Kaycee, reported The Buffalo Bulletin. Monteith is part of a team of game wardens, biologists and volunteers from the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, the Bureau of Land Management and the Clear Creek Conservation District who are studying the health of the Upper Powder River mule deer herd. The Laramie Boomerang also carried the story.

Research conducted by UW Professor Frank Rahel and former graduate student Jessica Dugan found that the Laramie River’s restoration projects are benefiting both game and nongame fish, reported The Laramie Boomerang.

The Rock Springs Rocket Miner published UW’s release announcing that Chris Bastian, a professor in the UW Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics, is this year’s recipient of the Andrew Vanvig Lifetime Distinguished Faculty Award.

The American Library Association published, on its website, a release noting that Yolanda Hood, the Carol J. McMurry Distinguished Librarian for Academic Excellence at UW, was selected as the editor of Young Adult Library Services. Hood will serve a one-year term.

The Fence Post reported that Doug Hixon, a professor emeritus in the UW Department of Animal Science, has been named the 2020 Friend of the National Western Stock Show.

The Torrington Telegram published an article on how UW students and researchers will use more than 25 years of research at the Hell Gap archaeological site in northwestern Goshen County to evaluate human occupation through time. UW Professor Marcel Kornfeld was interviewed for the article.

The Guernsey Gazette published UW’s release on ancient grains development in Wyoming. UW Extension researchers created the Wyoming First-Grains Project. Their goal is to build a niche industry in Wyoming’s agricultural economy. Oil City News published a similar story.

Members of UW’s Chi Omega sorority dropped off more than 75,000 letters to Santa at Macy’s in Fort Collins, Colo., last week for the store’s annual Believe campaign, reported The Coloradoan. As part of the campaign, Macy’s donates $1 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation for each letter to Santa.

Tara Righetti, an associate professor in the UW College of Law, was quoted in a Wyoming Public Media story on how 35 landowners in southeast Wyoming are suing Anadarko Petroleum. The landowners say the oil and gas company has found a way to take control of their minerals without consent.

Rural Radio Network published UW’s release on the success of the UW livestock judging team.

SweetwaterNOW and The Rock Springs Rocket Miner published UW’s release announcing that six UW students have been selected to receive the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study or work as interns abroad during this academic year. Two students are from Sweetwater County.

The Gillette News Record noted that area high school students won numerous awards at the Wyoming State Thespian Festival, which took place earlier this month at UW.
