UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

UW revised its fall semester plan, moving to a phased return to campus with all courses beginning online starting Aug. 24, The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) and Laramie Boomerang reported. Wyoming Public Media and Laramie Live also had separate reports.

The CS-T and The Boomerang interviewed UW President Ed Seidel in a wide-ranging interview in which he discussed the Mountain West Conference’s decision to halt all fall sports, including football, which is the UW Athletics Department’s major moneymaking sports program. The Guam Daily republished the same article.

As of late last week, nine known active COVID-19 cases among UW students and employees have been confirmed, according to a press release from the university, with a number of those cases reported through the pre-semester testing that UW is conducting for all employees and students, The Boomerang reported.

The Washington Post cited UW’s Black 14 football players as an example of athletes who sought change through protesting. The article focused on how some major college football players have laid out a plan to form a college football players association in the future to give athletes more of a say in the governance of the sport.

UW law Professor Michael Duff commented in a Bloomberg Law article on U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s insistence that legal liability protections for businesses, schools and colleges be included in any new coronavirus relief bills.

Yahoo Finance! also interviewed Duff for an article on schools choosing to reopen amid the pandemic that are attempting to protect themselves against possible legal blowback by making students sign liability waivers.

Several women with ties to UW were mentioned in USA Today’s feature article, titled “‘Equal rights’: Wyoming was first state to grant women the right to vote decades ahead of 19th Amendment.”

Sheridan Media published UW’s release announcing the university’s “When Cowboys Call, We Answer” campaign that is offered to 2020 UW graduates facing the challenging times navigating the job market after the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Black bears are being captured and fitted with collars in the Laramie Mountains of central Wyoming through late August, according to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. Radio collar data also contributes to a UW project on the ecology and behavior of black bears in the Bighorn and Laramie mountains.

A UW team is partnering with the National Weather Service to create an app to help better predict hazardous winter weather across the state, Wyoming Public Media reported. The goal is for travelers to be able to open their phones and be alerted to hazardous driving conditions along their routes.

Laramie Live published UW’s release noting that the Center for Professional Selling was recognized for the fourth consecutive year as a “Top Sales Program” by the Sales Education Foundation magazine.

KNEB Radio, in Scottsbluff, Neb., interviewed Tom Foulke, a UW research scientist, and Carrie Eberle, a UW assistant professor, about the Wyoming First-grains Project.

The Wyoming Conservation Corps, a stewardship program housed at UW, is preparing to begin a shortened fall work season due to the ongoing pandemic, The Laramie Boomerang reported.

UW football players and administrators reacted to the postponement of the fall season because of ongoing COVID-19 issues, according to The CS-T. The Mountain West Conference postponed all fall sports indefinitely, The CS-T, Wyoming Public Radio and The Wyoming Tribune Eagle all noted.

WyoSports noted that UW could lose approximately $8 million to $15 million in revenue after the Mountain West Conference postponed the football season last week.
