UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

UW will see a budget reduction of $42.3 million, a 10 percent cut mandated by Gov. Mark Gordon, over the next two years, reported The Laramie Boomerang. A subsequent budget reduction plan will be created in the coming months, according to a UW release published by Oil City News. The Associated Press published a similar article.

The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) and Cowboy State Daily reported that UW ended its pause on in-person classes last week and resumed its phased fall return plan. The pause of nearly two weeks was prompted by an outbreak of coronavirus cases among the campus community. The Gillette News Record, Wyo4News and Sheridan Media published UW’s release.

Holly Krutka, executive director of UW’s School of Energy Resources, was quoted in a CS-T article, titled “Wyoming wants to keep coal burning. But is carbon capture the answer?”

The social and economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have hit Wyoming women especially hard, according to the Wyoming Survey and Analysis Center (WYSAC), located at UW. The Wyoming Tribune Eagle published the survey.

Wyo4News published UW’s release noting that the university has developed a set of indicators to be monitored daily to inform decisions related to COVID-19.

A $175,000 grant from the Department of Workforce Services will enable UW’s Innovation Wyrkshop to set up mini-makerspaces around the state that will focus on providing opportunities for young adults with disabilities, reported Wyoming Public Radio.

Oil City News published UW’s release noting that Associate Professor Patrick Johnson and Assistant Professor Karen Wawrousek received a one-year grant to develop a highly sensitive, highly replicable and portable diagnostic assay for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Wyoming Public Media carried a similar story.

The UW Board of Trustees recently approved to allow public access on newly acquired Pilot Hill parcels. The Boomerang published a related article noting that the Pilot Hill area is now open on a limited basis.

Wyoming Public Radio noted that Bonnie Heidel, UW lead botanist at the Wyoming Natural Diversity Database, and fellow researchers collaborated to identify 65 extinct plants in North America.

The latest “The World Needs More Cowboys” celebration will be later this month in Casper. Oil City News published UW’s release announcing the information.

County 10 published UW’s release noting that UW Assistant Professor Thomas Boothby is joining a live downlink for children as part of a Story Time from Space program beamed from the International Space Station. The Wyoming Tribune Eagle had a similar article.

UW doctoral candidate Craig Calkins is helping UW Extension unravel the mystery of a pestilence -- the horn fly -- that costs the livestock industry billions of dollars in losses. The Farmer published UW’s release on the research.

Oil City News published UW’s release noting that next month’s Homecoming will feature some virtual events, and some traditional in-person activities have been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

WYSAC noted that Wyoming residents are attending outdoor public events and are less concerned about the spread of COVID-19, but the majority say they still wear face protection in indoor public places. Wyo4News published UW’s release on the latest survey. The CS-T had a similar article.

SweetwaterNOW published UW’s release noting that researchers have advanced artificial intelligence technology to identify images of wild animals from camera-trap photographs in North America.

A new publication from UW Extension analyzes the key components of employment change over 17 years for Wyoming, each of its counties and the Rocky Mountain region. County 10 published the report from “Evaluating Key Components of Employment Change.”

The CS-T reported that UW is doing everything possible to end the postponement of football and other fall sports, according to President Ed Seidel.
