UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

WyoFile interviewed UW economist Rob Godby for his comments on the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision that limits the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s authority over greenhouse gas emission reduction strategies. Godby says the ruling will not hand the state more powers to fight against market forces driven by energy policies in the more than 20 states that consume Wyoming coal.

UW President Ed Seidel; Scott Thomas, the John P. “Jack” Ellbogen Dean of the College of Education; and Gabrielle Allen, director of the School of Computing, were recognized at the 62nd annual Eastern Shoshone Indian Days Powwow for their work and commitment to education on the Wind River Indian Reservation. Seidel is one of two keynote speakers for the 12th annual Rocky Mountain Advanced Computing Consortium’s High Performance Computing Symposium next month. InsideHPC noted that the symposium will be in Boulder, Colo.

The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) reported that the UW College of Education has selected its first Wyoming Teacher-Mentor Corps cohort. The program will equip teacher mentors with tools to support early-career educators. Wyoming News Today and The Sheridan Press published UW’s release. WyoFile carried a related article.

UW expects to break ground on its $250 million residence hall project this November with an estimated completion date in March 2025. The Laramie Boomerang reported that the two residence halls will be located on the UW campus west of 15th Street. The south hall will be at the intersection with Willett Drive, and the north hall will be at the intersection with Lewis Street.

“Futureproof With Jonathan McCrea,” a Newstalk podcast, interviewed Jeff Lockwood, a UW professor of natural sciences and humanities, for an episode titled “A Brief History of Weaponised Insects.” Lockwood is the author of “Six-Legged Soldiers: Using Insects as Weapons of War.”

WyoFile interviewed Gary Beauvais, Wyoming Natural Diversity Database (WYNDD) director, for an article focusing on a recent conservation tour of the Laramie area by the president of the biodiversity data organization NatureServe. WYNDD, located at UW, gathers information on species of conservation concern across the state.

The Jackson Hole News & Guide published a WyoFile article on how the western glacier stonefly, Wyoming’s only federally listed threatened insect, has been discovered in more high-country streams. Lusha Tronstad, lead invertebrate zoologist with UW’s WYNDD, was interviewed for the article.

Hanna Crockett, the co-primary chairperson of UW’s Queer Community Coalition, spoke with The Wyoming Tribune Eagle for an article titled “LGBTQ+ voters emphasize importance of representation.”

HealthySimulation.com noted that UW added a HAL 3201 high-fidelity patient simulator for nursing training purposes. The patient simulator mimics human anatomy or function (physiology), which can be used to educate students and train health care professionals.

Bryan Shuman, a UW professor and Wyoming Excellence Chair, was among speakers at the recent inaugural Wyoming Climate Summit in Lander, reported WyoFile.

The Baltimore Sun interviewed UW College of Law Professor Michael Duff for an article that focused on Baltimore-area Apple and Starbucks workers who have led the way in forming unions. However, labor experts warn that employees face difficulty ahead in a process tilted heavily in favor of employers.

Researchers, led by UW Professor Robert Kelly, conducted an exhaustive survey of documented radiocarbon dates in the lower 48 states. Archaeology noted that the radiocarbon dates have been logged in the Canadian Archaeological Radiocarbon Database that is maintained by the University of British Columbia.

Holly Krutka, UW School of Energy Resources executive director, was interviewed for a WyoFile piece titled “Lawmakers seek deal for coal carbon capture.” Krutka commented on UW’s research on carbon capture, utilization and storage technologies.

Beef magazine noted that UW is among entities involved in a $19 million research initiative aimed at understanding how a farmer’s or rancher’s grazing management decisions impact soil health and how soil health can positively impact land and producer well-being.

Twenty-seven UW students recently were the first to obtain a Bachelor of Science in construction management through the UW College of Engineering and Applied Science. SweetwaterNOW published UW’s announcement, which included two local students from the county.

WyoToday Media reported that Steve Smutko and Birch Malotky, of UW’s Ruckelshaus Institute and the Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources, gave presentations at Wyoming Outdoor Recreation Collaborative meetings in Casper and Gillette.

Seven different languages will be offered later this month through UW’s World Language and Culture Intensive Summer Camp sessions. Wyoming News Now published UW’s release on the announcement.

Oil City News reported that the Wyoming Small Business Development Center Network, located at UW, is sponsoring a new Community Navigator Program, which aims to provide support to traditionally underserved small businesses in Wyoming.

Lachlan Gebhart, of Lander Middle School, won third place in the Junior Individual Documentary division at the virtual 2022 National History Day Contest. UW’s American Heritage Center sponsors Wyoming History Day, according to a UW release published by Sheridan Media.

The Laramie Boomerang featured the Wyoming Territorial Prison’s 150th anniversary. The article noted that, in 1903, the site was turned over to UW for use as an agricultural experiment station.
