UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

UW-Casper Assistant Professor Amanda DeDiego was interviewed by ABC News for a piece on Wyoming’s suicide rate, which is more than double that of the national average. She and Lisa Scroggins, Natrona County Library executive director, are spearheading a new project to create spaces that sidestep the stigma of seeking help called Wyoming Public Access to Telehealth Services (WyPATHS).

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle quoted UW economist Anne Alexander in an article that focused on the inflation surge nationwide and how it affects Wyoming’s economy and the state’s consumers. UW economist Rob Godby spoke with Cowboy State Daily for a similar article.

Godby told The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) the price of oil is “the biggest reason” for the decline of fuel prices at the pump. His comments on the costs of oil and gasoline were part of an article titled “Gas prices sink below record highs, but supply chain troubles persist.”

UW’s six-year graduation rate has improved by 3.5 percentage points to 60.2 percent of students graduating in the cohort between 2015 and 2021, according to a UW media release cited by The Laramie Boomerang. UW was among statewide entities represented in the Educational Attainment Executive Council that focused on improving graduation rates at the university and community colleges.

The Wildlife Society profiled John Koprowski, dean of UW’s Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources, who was named the 2022 recipient of The Wildlife Society’s Aldo Leopold Memorial Award. He is the first UW faculty member to receive the highest award given by the 11,000-member organization of professional wildlife scientists.

UW psychology Professor Matt Gray was among professionals interviewed for a Knowable Magazine article that delved into how psychologists are now finding that moral code violations can leave an enduring mark -- and may require new types of therapy.

The Laramie Boomerang noted that academic autonomy and diversity of ideas were the main focus of a meeting between state lawmakers and UW’s Board of Trustees as part of a three-day board retreat in Pinedale last week.

UW political science Professor Jim King commented in a CS-T article that focused on U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney’s Republican primary election battle against challenger Harriet Hageman next month.

Coal Zoom published UW’s release noting that university researchers recently published a policy analysis article in the journal Environmental Science & Technology that examines the potential role of economic and policy incentives to facilitate carbon capture and storage deployment in the state.

The Beef Reproduction Task Force -- a multistate extension group that includes UW -- and Texas A&M University will host the 2022 Applied Reproductive Strategies in Beef Cattle Workshop in San Antonio, Texas, next month, according to Beef magazine.

Sheridan Media published UW’s release announcing that the Sheridan Research and Extension Center’s annual field day and open house will take place next week.

UW’s IMPACT 307 recently announced that John Wetzel, of Powell, is Park County’s new business counselor, according to Big Horn Radio Network. IMPACT 307 is a statewide network of innovation-driven business incubators committed to growing and strengthening Wyoming’s entrepreneurial communities.

The Sublette Examiner published UW’s release noting that Alvin Oung, a UW clinical associate professor of pharmacy practice, received the 2022 Distinguished Young Pharmacist Award, presented by the Colorado Pharmacists Society.

Big Horn Radio Network featured the Healthier Wyoming program, an initiative of the Wyoming Center on Aging at UW. The goal of the initiative is to empower all Wyoming residents to take charge of their health through the use of a comprehensive statewide directory of chronic disease prevention and management resources.

Swimmer Katelyn Blattner, from Wichita, Kan., is UW’s nominee for the NCAA’s Woman of the Year. A total of 577 nominees from all three NCAA divisions were nominated for the 32nd year of the award, according to WyoSports.
