Bret Hess is a native of Nevada, and received both BS and MS degrees in Animal Science from the University of Nevada, Reno. He earned his PhD at the University of Missouri, Columbia in Animal Science with emphasis in Ruminant Nutrition.

Dr. Hess began his career at the University of Wyoming in 1996 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Animal Science. He progressed through the professorial ranks (promoted to Professor in 2008) and continued with a research and teaching appointment in the Department of Animal Science through the spring of 2010. Dr. Hess also served as the Assistant Director of the Wyoming Agricultural Experiment Station from the summer of 2007 through January 2010, after which he was appointed and continues to serve as Associate Dean and Director of the Wyoming Agricultural Experiment Station.

Dr. Hess has served concurrent terms in several leadership positions in his role as Associate Dean and Director, including interim head of the Department of Plant Sciences, interim director of the Sheridan Research & Extension Center, and interim director of the Powell Research & Extension Center.

Dr. Hess has been heavily involved with the American Society of Animal Science (ASAS). He served as Western Director on the Board of ASAS and as an ASAS representative on the Board for the Federation of Animal Science Societies.

Dr. Hess also has been a very active member of the Western Association of Agricultural Experiment Station Directors, where he has served as Chair, co-authored the Western Perspective and Western Agenda, and continues to serve as Chair of the Western Agenda Implementation Team.

Dr. Hess’ leadership at the national level has included serving as the Chair of the Budget and Legislative Committee for the Experiment Station Committee on Organization and Policy and Chair of the Experiment Station Section of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities.

Before joining administration, Dr. Hess was an accomplished scholar, teacher and graduate student mentor – he has published 87 refereed scientific articles; chaired or served on 35 graduate committees, with many of his students receiving regional or national awards for their research; and has been recognized for exceptional teaching and graduate student mentoring, including receiving an Alpha Gamma Rho Props for Profs Certificate of Appreciation, being nominated for the College of Agriculture’s Lawrence Meeboer Teaching Award, and being recognized as both an Outstanding Master’s Thesis Advisor and Outstanding Dissertation Advisor by the University of Wyoming. Dr. Hess has received the Young Scientist Award by the Western Section of American Society of Animal Science and the American Society of Animal Science Early Career Achievement Award.
