About the Program

The biology major is an interdepartmental program. It enables students to combine courses in biology, botany, zoology, molecular biology and other biological sciences to meet requirements of the major. Specific courses selected may vary according to students' interests and are worked out by consultations between student and adviser.

Students earning the bachelor’s degree in biology can seek employment in private business and public agencies, apply to professional schools (veterinary, medical, etc…) or pursue additional graduate training.

Program Requirements

The major requires a minimum of 30 hours in biology with a grade of C or better, beginning with BIOL 1010 and BIOL 2020. At least 6 hours must be taken from formal courses in botany (BOT), and 6 hours in zoology (ZOO), all at the 3000-level or above (research hours earned in BOT 4900, ZOO 4900, or special internship or practicum courses may not be used to satisfy the formal course work requirement in botany and zoology). Genetics (BIOL 4000) must be taken.

Two courses (beyond BIOL 1010, 2020) which include laboratories (or field experience) must be taken. The remaining electives comprising the balance of the biology major may be taken from any course (at the 2000 level or above) in the biological sciences.

Considering Graduate School?

Students anticipating applying to graduate school should consider taking additional courses in mathematics, statistics, computer science, organic chemistry and biochemistry, and should prepare to take the Graduate Record Examination no later than the fall semester of the senior year.
