Kenya Travel Study 2004

From June 9 - 24 2004, a total of 20 UW students and other members of Casper community participated in the summer of 2004 “Study abroad Experience” in Kenya, Africa. This 3 week experience enabled participants to use primary resources to explore the similarities and differences between Kenyan and American cultures including the impact of geo-political, economic, religious, social and educational issues. Reacting to experiences in Kenyan schools, one participant said,

“I was truly amazed to see how the schools did so much in the way of teaching their students without the convenience of having enough textbooks to go around (one school had an average one textbook per four students), and 50 children in their classrooms (with one teacher). The lack of paper, pencils, and even chalk for the teachers to write on the boards was also very obvious in these classrooms. Many of these children came to school without shoes and are so poor that they only eat one or two meals a day."

Participants had also the opportunity to study the issues surrounding HIV/AIDS and the multiple roles of the African woman. The opportunity to experience diverse Kenyan wildlife and plants including snorkeling in the Indian Ocean was transformational. Reflecting on the whole experience, one participant said,

"I know that because of Africa I have learned a lot about myself and how I react to different cultures. Kenyans do not have what we have and may appear lacking, but also appear very blessed. These are people who may not understand the new advances of technology but can understand who you are in a matter of minutes. It was a great experience that I would love to have again. It was honestly a dream come true. I got to see giraffes in the wild next to an African sunset. I got to swim and snorkel in the Indian Ocean and I got haggled in the big city of Nairobi. WHAT else could a girl want? I am using this experience for my Master's class. Thanks for the opportunity."
