Academic Competitive Grants/National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (SMART GRANT)

Annual award amounts for SMART Grants:

  • Third-year students - $4,000
  • Fourth-year students - $4,000

Eligibility requirements for SMART Grants:

  • Must be Pell Grant eligible
  • Musts be full-time students
  • Must be citizens of the U.S. (permanent residents are not eligible)
  • Must be enrolled in a two or four year degreee-granting institution of higher education
  • Have at least a cumulative 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale
  • Major in Biology or Mathematics/Science

Process - Around July 1, 2006 students who the US Department of Education thinks may qualify for either program will be notified and asked to go to a web-site to self-determine their eligibility. Financial Aid offices will be notified of the students for self-selecting themselves and then must certify based on a review of high school transcripts and majors. The Office of Student Financial Aid will also select students.
