UWyo MagazineWhen You Keep a Promise, Keep It

It’s challenging for students to raise more than $80,000 a year, but for Nordic Ski Club President Elect Sierra Jech and her fellow ski team members, it’s a commitment they make each year—dedicating hundreds of hours of hard work to make it happen.

Although it’s a club sport at UW, the team is an affiliate member of the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association, and the athletes compete in western Division 1 races. In December 2013, they also attended their second World University Games, this one in Trentino, Italy. The coaching staff is all volunteer, and the approximately 30 students are of varying levels.

“It’s an amazing program for people who are interested in staying active,” says Jech, an earth system science and chemistry senior originally from Cody, Wyo. “We train every day of the week except Mondays, year-round. We put a lot of focus on health, and the students really get a lot out of it.”

The team works football games, rakes leaves and does countless other things to raise money, but Jech initiated one of the largest fundraisers, Trash 2 Treasures, which prevents hundreds of pounds of waste from going to the landfill.

“We collect stuff that people would normally throw out in the spring—mostly during move-out weekend,” Jech says. “We store it and clean it all summer long, and then resell it to students and community members in the fall. It’s a great way to keep all that stuff out of the landfill, it’s a good way to provide cheap furniture and household goods to students and the community, and it’s also a fundraiser.”

While Jech only has one year left on the team, Trash 2 Treasures will continue to help raise money each year for a team that provides ski enthusiasts a place for fitness, friendship and leadership.

IMPACT: Bringing Trash 2 Treasures to UW, preventing hundreds of pounds of trash from going into landfills and supporting the Nordic Ski Club at the same time.
