Companies that recruit on campus share what attributes help UW graduates land jobs.

By Micaela Myers

About 300 employers recruit University of Wyoming students on campus each year via UW’s Career Services and its five annual job fairs, as well as through specific colleges. What are these employers looking for in recent graduates, and how are UW students meeting those needs? UWyo Magazine sat down with three companies who regularly recruit here to find out.

“We have a great relationship with the College of Business and recruit on campus every year,” says Andy Worshek, director of human resources for McGee, Hearne & Paiz LLP, a certified public accounting and consulting firm in Cheyenne, Wyo. “The majority of our accountants are UW graduates. We look for individuals who are self-motivated, self-disciplined and have an exceptional work ethic. A solid knowledge of accounting principles teamed with the work ethic we find in UW graduates are a perfect fit for our office. We highly value the professionalism and service to community mindset we find in the accounting graduates we have hired at UW.”

Many companies who recruit on campus hire students first as interns.

“Historically, the best way for a college graduate to gain employment with Anadarko is through our internship program,” says Lance Fondren, a UW graduate and landman for Anadarko Petroleum Corp. “This is great news for UW. We take great pride in our internship programs and were recently recognized as offering the best summer internship programs in the energy industry by Vault Inc. While we have interacted with numerous schools at UW, we are largely focused on the School of Energy Resources, primarily in candidates that have a concentration in professional land management.”

“Students from UW generally have a tremendous work ethic and a passion for both energy and the environment,” Fondren continues. “They are oftentimes sportsmen, hikers, skiers and outdoor enthusiasts who understand the importance of energy for modern life and its necessity in our local and national economies. Being both a steward for the environment and an advocate for energy production is what we strive for at Anadarko. We see this in students from UW. Students are teachable and able to thrive in a fast-paced and demanding work environment from day one.”
