A reason to stay connected to UW

By Keener Fry

A key component of the University of Wyoming Alumni Association’s mission is “to foster a spirit of loyalty and community among its alumni.” We build community by bringing alumni together at UWAAhosted events and functions on campus, throughout Wyoming or around the country. Increasingly, alumni are staying connected to UW through online community resources, including WyoAlumni, UWAA Mobile App, UWAA website and multiple social media networking initiatives. Refer to page 60 for a full listing of these online resources. Our alumni have told us that meeting other alumni who share their passion and loyalty for the brown and gold through these avenues is something they highly value. Networking with other enthusiastic UW alumni in person or online is among the most significant benefits of staying connected to your alma mater through the alumni association.

Whether you visit campus regularly, have not visited campus in quite a while or were last on campus as a student, there is no better time to return than this fall. We invite you back to Laramie to enjoy the beautiful season and visit some of the very special attractions on campus.

Explore the Marian H. Rochelle Gateway Center, UW’s new state-of-the-art “front door.” You can celebrate the history and traditions of your alma mater by engaging with the interactive exhibits and displays. There is no shortage of memorable photo opportunities within the facility, especially in front of the sculptures Wyoming Cowboy and Breakin’ Through. Also, plan to visit the recently renovated Arena-Auditorium, Harry C. Vaughn UW Planetarium, Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts, Half Acre Recreation and Wellness Center and the new Michael B. Enzi STEM Facility. These are just a few of the remarkable additions representing the progress we have made to enhance the UW life experience for students, faculty, alumni and friends.

You will find many events available to reconnect with friends and acquaintances. The UW Alumni Association is here to serve you and help you connect with the excitement that surrounds being a Cowboy or Cowgirl. The 2015 Cowboy football season offers six home games, with activities associated with each. Three hours before kickoff, the alumni association in conjunction with the UW Foundation and Athletics will host the Pokes Pre-game Pep Rally at the Marian H. Rochelle Gateway Center. Get fired up with a talk by Coach Bohl, watch the traditional Cowboy Walk by the team, and receive a “Once a Cowboy, Always a Cowboy” bandana (compliments of UWAA to the first 250 UWAA members in attendance each week).

A reception will be held on Sept. 11, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the alumni house. Our traditional Homecoming activities are scheduled for Oct. 15–17, highlighted with the Cowboys vs. Nevada football game. More details of 2015 Homecoming are included on the inside front cover. In addition to the football games, there are multiple cultural programs and fine arts performances throughout the fall for you to enjoy. All in all, the fall is an exciting time to visit UW, and there is plenty to see and do.

As a 1976 UW graduate stated while honoring his son at a 2011 graduation party: “The University of Wyoming is a great place to be and a great place to come back to.” We welcome you back to campus and invite you to stop in to say “Hello.” We want to hear your stories, memories and experiences that capture everything UW is to you and what it should be to all—a great place to come back to, full of pride in being University of Wyoming alumni.

Hope to see you soon!
