FROM THE UWAA PRESIDENT

Wow! What a year! I have been truly honored and incredibly blessed to have served as your UWAA board president. Who could envision when I first served on the board in the early 1990s that almost 30 years later I would be president? Not me!

I remember as a young board member how hard former Executive Director Robbie Darnall and her staff worked at communicating with alumni in the days before social media. They built relationships that continue to this day. The board then, as now, was composed of people committed to UW who wanted to provide meaningful ways for alumni across the world to engage with UW and one another. What started years ago continues to grow in ways that were not even imagined then—social media, the expansion of the campus in enrollment, innovative academic opportunities and new facilities.

Today, your Alumni Association works with the Office of Admissions on student recruitment; helps graduates connect with alumni mentors through the Cowboy-to-Cowboy program; and has formed the Brown and Gold Council, consisting of growing networks and chapters across the country and the world—word has it there will soon be a chapter in Norway!—all while providing opportunities for alumni to gather and reconnect at events. One of my first acts as president was to send board members and staff a magnet that read “Think Big”—and they have! I thank the board and officers, Keener Fry and the wonderful staff who work incredibly hard, UW President Nichols and officials, and you—the members who show support with your time, talent and treasure. No matter where I have traveled this past year—the Rockies game in Denver, the New York Jets-Buffalo Bills football game and pregame gatherings, to name a few—it has reinforced to me that no matter how far we are from UW, whether in time or distance, UW cowboys and cowgirls love the brown and gold.

If you aren’t already, I encourage you to become active in a network (or start one) and be an advocate and supporter of your UW and the Alumni Association. The World Needs More Cowboys!

My best in Brown and Gold,

Jane Farrell, B.A. ’77

UWAA President
