During our spring 2020 Admitted Student Writing Project campaign, we received a lot of heartfelt and meaningful sentiment from alumni as they wrote letters to over 4,000 prospective students. One alumnus in particular looped me in on an email conversation he had with a prospective student in Texas who shared genuine appreciation in receiving a letter and pride for the University of Wyoming:

“I have always wanted to go to UW and am very prideful in the fact I will be a Cowboy. I haven’t been admitted but a couple months and already two of my guitars have UW logos plastered on them. I often wear a UW shirt and am more than happy to point it out. When I am at work and people ask any questions about my future plans, I tell them what I have just told you. Usually I am the kind of person who does not share anything with people unless I find it absolutely necessary, but when it comes to my future education and my future as a Cowboy, I am very prideful (and I am not often a prideful person). I thank you again for your letter, it has made me more sure than ever that I have made the right decision. Thank you again and I hope to hear from you again one day.”

This story is proof that no matter what stage of life someone is in, the affinity we have for UW is extraordinary and is shared throughout the country and world. Furthermore, this is just one example of many inspirational stories that continually supplement our purpose and focus in helping alumni and friends stay involved and connected.

This past spring the Alumni Association celebrated a memorable event on March 26, 2020—our 125th birthday. During the first meeting in 1895, the historic colors of UW were decided. The meeting décor featured brown-eyed Susan flowers, and alumni were so impressed with the brown and gold beauty of the flower that they decided to select these as UW’s official school colors. Today, faithful Wyoming alumni and fans all over the world wear brown and gold with pride. We are proud of our 125-year history. As you read the feature stories in this section, I believe you will be pleased to learn of the diverse professions our alumni have.

Lastly, I believe it important to provide our alumni and friends with information on the impact the recent COVID-19 had on our programming and services and our response to the challenges created by this issue. In our effort to be responsible organization and play a role in delaying and minimizing the spread and transmission of the virus, we canceled or postponed the remaining spring events through June 30, 2020. The best way to receive updates about our alumni programming and activities is to check our Facebook page @UWalumniassociation and our website, uwyo.edu/alumni. Once this has passed, we look forward to returning to an active schedule of alumni engagement and programming.

My best in Brown and Gold,

Keener Fry, Executive Director
