Returning Students

Education Abroad

Students who have received Cheney Scholarship funds to support their Education Abroad program are required to perform a 'Give Back' activity upon their return.  There are a number of ways in which students can fulfill this requirement.  It's really quite easy!

1. UWYO Global Buddies

For many of the international students, their trip to Laramie is also their first trip the United States.  They are excited about their time here and are looking forward to meeting new people.  Why not connect with one of these students and help him or her get settled? Our UWYO Global Buddies program pairs American students that have studied abroad with incoming International Exchange students at UW. Become a UWYO Global Buddy and enjoy 5+ activities together throughout the course of the semester and full UWYO Global Buddy group activities and monthly meetings. Learn about each other’s cultures, cook for each other international food, explore Laramie or surrounding areas together, go hiking in Vedauwoo, the possibilities are endless! This is a great way to make new friends, and you will both benefit from the cultural exchange!

2. Prepare a short presentation for one of your classes

If one of your classes contains an international component that overlaps with your time abroad, talk about it! Ask your professor if you can speak to the class for about 10 minutes to share your experiences with your fellow students. This is a great opportunity to show some photos from your trip and to talk about how your time abroad has and will continue to enrich your education and future career. Just be sure to mention how the Cheney Scholarship helped to fund your Education Abroad program!

3. Volunteer at a Resource Fair

The university offers resource fairs during the spring and fall semesters, and we are always looking for students who are willing to help out! These fairs provide a great opportunity to inspire others with your experiences abroad. The time commitment is small - only 45 minutes - but it can make a huge impact!

4. Join the UWYO Abroad Ambassadors

Does all of this sound like fun? Do you feel so strongly about your time abroad that you can’t wait to share with others your amazing experience and convince them to spend time abroad as well? Then the UWYO Abroad Ambassadors may be a great “give back” for you. Our UWYO Abroad Ambassadors are an official arm of the Education Abroad Office, promoting EA opportunities across campus to prospective UW students, parents and current UW students through UWYO Abroad Fairs, International Education Week events, Education Abroad 101 Sessions, UW Class Presentations, HS visits, Union Tabling, UW Discovery Days, Orientations, Admissions Resource Fairs and so much more! Also benefit with monthly UWYO Abroad Ambassadors to share your stories from your time abroad and a special “marketing your EA experience professionally” workshop!

Gain skills that will help you translate your experiences abroad in a way that will make you a great candidate for jobs and graduate opportunities.

5. What ideas do you have?

Any ideas you may have in mind that will help internationalize the UW campus are always welcomed by our staff. Present on Education Abroad opportunities at your RSO, Fraternity or Sorority? Have an informal presentation (Q & A) for the students that are about to go to the country that you just came back from! Come talk to us about what you'd like to do. The possibilities are endless!

Please note also that as a recipient of a Cheney Scholarship, part of your give-back requirement is to tell others about your experience and how the scholarship aided you.  This includes write-ups in local newspapers or university newsletters.  This is a great way to thank our donors publicly, as well as to tell others about the opportunities available to them!
