Returning Students

Education Abroad

Students who have received Cheney Scholarship funds to support their Education Abroad program are required to perform a 'Give Back' activity upon their return.  There are a number of ways in which students can fulfill this requirement.  It's really quite easy!

1. Help with incoming foreign students

For many of the international students, their trip to Laramie is also their first trip the the United States.  They are excited about their time here, and are looking forward to meeting new people.  Why not connect with one of these students and help him or her get settled?  This can be as simple as agreeing to meet for coffee after class once a week until they settle in.  In most cases, international students need help and advice on how to find their way around campus and Laramie, as well as how to purchase books and go shopping.  This is a great way to make new friends, and you will both benefit from the cultural exchange!

2. Ambassadors

By joining our Ambassadors, you can help recruit other students to study abroad at resource fairs, educate classmates on the benefits, connect as a "buddy" with new international students, and gain skills that will help you translate your experiences abroad in a way that will make you a great candidate for jobs and graduate opportunities.

3. Prepare a short presentation for one of your classes

If one of your classes contains an international component that overlaps with your time abroad, talk about it!  Ask your professor if you can speak to the class for about 10 minutes to share your experiences with your fellow students.  This is a great opportunity to show some photos from your trip and to talk about how your time abroad has and will continue to enrich your education and future career.  Just be sure to mention how the Cheney Scholarship helped to fund your Study Abroad program!

4. Volunteer at a Resource Fair

The university offers resource fairs during the spring and fall semesters, and we are always looking for students who are willing to be ambassadors!  These fairs provide a great opportunity to inspire others with your experiences abroad.  The time commitment is small - only 45 minutes - but it can make a huge impact!

5. What ideas do you have?

Any ideas you may have in mind that will help internationalize the UW campus are always welcomed by our staff.  Come talk to us about what you'd like to do.  The possibilities are endless!

Please note also that as a recipient of a Cheney Scholarship, part of your give-back requirement is to tell others about your experience and how the scholarship aided you.  This includes write-ups in local newspapers or university newsletters.  This is a great way to thank our donors publicly, as well as to tell others about the opportunities available to them!
