Cowboys Turn Heads at the Clash
November 25, 2013 – The UW Hockey club travelled out to Sioux Center, Iowa this past weekend, upsetting the #4 and #11 teams in the Pacific Region.
The Cowboys didn’t start the tournament on a good note, Wyoming suffered a 2-1 loss to the tournament host, Dordt College Thursday night. The Cowboys fought hard all game and out shot the Dordt Blades but were unable to get a lucky bounce.
Friday was a new day for the Cowboys, forgetting about the loss from the night before and focusing on the upcoming game with Wisconsin - Platteville, a team Wyoming does not see in the regular season. The Cowboys scored less than a minute into the game, giving them a boost of confidence. That boost quickly gave them two more goals which led to Wisconsin - Platteville calling a timeout only 5 minutes into the game, down 3-0. The Pioneers would battle back scoring twice in the first period and once in the third but it was not enough as the Cowboys put away three more goals making it a final of 6-3. Beau Jackson (Calgary, Alberta) scored the first two goals Cowboys, Jake Bates and Ben Bates, the two brothers from Jackson, Wyo. both netted a goal for Wyoming. Dustin Galbreath (Parker, Colo.) and Roland Valadez (Longmont, Colo.) also contributed a goal for the Cowboys’ victory.
Saturday morning held the toughest test for Wyoming as they took on #4 Marquette. The two games prior to this, Marquette lost to Colorado State (6-3) and Metro State (4-2). Once again, less than a minute into the game, Beau Jackson comes up big for the Cowboys and puts in the first goal. Marquette would soon answer making the score 1-1, then the game turned into a goal for goal battle until the end of the 3rd period. The game was tied 3-3 after 60 minutes of hockey so lets begin 4-on-4 overtime hockey! The first three minutes of the 5 minute overtime was constantly going back and forth down the ice, both teams getting great opportunities. Clayton Haworth fired a puck on net with 2 minutes left in overtime, the puck sailed just under the goalie’s arm into the back of the net, Wyoming wins 4-3 in overtime.
