This 2-credit class is designed for graduate students and undergraduate seniors with an interest in infectious diseases. The instructor is Dr. Gerry Andrews. It consists of lectures and small group discussions that explore and survey the molecular basis of bacterial virulence in people and animals. Student responsibilities include note-taking and preparation for discussion by completion of reading assignments. These consist of classic and/or recent journal articles addressing weekly topics that include: pathoadaptation and hypervirulence; adherence; in vitro and in vivo modeling; virulence gene regulation; and protein translocation.
Graduate students taking this at the 5220 level will have additional expectations, such as preparing a talk and/or paper on an assigned topic.
