Dr. O'Toole is interested in spontaneous disease of animals. When possible, he tries to extract useful information from natural disease outbreaks, rather than in experiment settings. He collaborates with virologist Dr. Hong Li and his group at the USDA's ARS unit at Washington State University on malignant catarrhal fever, specifically its pathogenesis and prevention. Other interests are inherited and iatrogenic diseases. He mentors junior and senior veterinary students externs as part of the WSVL's diagnostic externship program.
