Browser Displays Mixed Content Warning

“My browser (IE, Mozilla, Chrome) won’t show pages correctly when I log into the Cascade CMS server. What’s happening and how can I fix it?”

Firefox mixed content warningMicrosoft, Mozilla and Google have their browsers set to warn users when they access mixed content – content that is a mix of secure (HTTPS) and non-secure (HTTPS) pages. To make sure HTTP content mixed with an HTTPS page can’t be improperly manipulated, the browsers block the HTTP content. The browsers ask the users whether the http content should be displayed or not. Action by the user can disable the content blocking.

As CMS authors have to log into Cascade on an intranet and authenticate against their UW permissions, the CMS has HTTPS pages. However, some content, specifically the stylesheets that state how a page should look are hosted on the basic www.uwyo.edu server in a non-secure HTTP format so the public can easily view live web pages.

Firefox has been the browser of choice in managing Cascade web pages, due to the previous passive approach to mixed content – users could customize their browsers to not display mixed content, but the browser didn’t automatically excluded mixed content. Firefox now has a proactive approach to mixed content as part of an effort to make the browsing experience safer for users. However, this approach has made it more complicated to use when updating pages in Cascade.

Here is information by Microsoft, Mozilla and Google about viewing mixed content and how to change browsers settings to allow the content to be displayed correctly in the CMS. Remember, the URL specific to the Cascade server for customizing browser security settings is https://cascade.uwyo.edu/
