Orphaned Files

Prevent orphaned assets permanently

What is an orphan file?

Orphan files occur when a page, file or folder are deleted from the CMS site, but still exist on the server (the live website that the CMS publishes to).

Setting Un-publish as default:

Click the down arrow next to your username icon in the top right corner

Click Settings

In the page that appears, select the option un-publish on move/delete.

How to avoid orphaned files

Orphaned files can be avoided when deleting files in the CMS by ensuring that the unpublish option is selected.

How to unpublish during a delete

Select the asset you wish to delete in the CMS file tree.

Right click and select the delete tab.

Orphaned Files Delete in menu

In the new window that appears, there may be a delete warning informing you that the selected page is still being used within other assets. To avoid broken links, make sure the asset you are deleting is not being used by other pages.

Since we have selected un-publish as default within our personal settings, the asset will automatically be un-published from the web servers during a delete.

How can I check for orphaned files?

Unfortunately, there is no way to see a report of orphaned files. Orphaned files are no longer associated with the CMS, making them invisible to the CMS, the only way to find the files is to contact webhelp@uwyo.edu and have the web team compare the server files against your sites file tree.

Why are orphaned files an issue?

Orphan files pose a problem when the website undergoes a full site republish. Though the files cannot be seen in the CMS file tree, the files may still be linked to by hyperlinks in your site. If orphaned files are still linked in your site, a full site republish will remove this files resulting in broken links.  You will then need to fix the broken links on your site.
