2010 Geography Awareness Week Poster Contest
The Wyoming Geographic Alliance hosted its first poster contest in conjunction with Geography Awareness Week, November 14-20, 2010. We are very excited with the enthusiasm that this contest received this year, and can't wait for this program to grow in coming years! The WGA is considering a bookmark contest to replace the poster contest in 2011.
The theme for Geography Awareness Week 2010 and the poster contest was "Freshwater", and for Wyoming students there couldn't be a more fitting theme. Water is a resource that is cherished in our state, and that is where we wanted students to take this theme. We wanted them to think of how water is used in our state, a state with the headwaters of three major rivers in it- the North Platte- Missouri, Green- Colorado and Snake- Columbia Rivers. Yet, much of this water is reserved and used downriver in surrounding states and large cities for municipalities, agriculture, energy, and recreation. The "Freshwater" theme is something that Wyoming students can relate to personally, and the hope is that they will let their creative and academic imaginations run wild with this project, learn something, and enjoy themselves while also promoting the theme and geography.
