Sunderland Black Cats

Current Sunderland crest features a pithead wheel (symbolic of the region's mining heritage), two local landmarks, and two lions.


 

 

 

City of Sunderland coat of arms dates to the 1500s and contains elements adopted in the team's crest.


Example of a pithead wheel. Mining is still a part of Sunderland life, with a 2011 controversy over plans to dig open-pit mines in local greenbelt areas.


An underground coal mine explosion in 1708 claimed 69 lives. Schoolchildren commemorated the 300th anniversary of the disaster in 2008 with a service.


Penshaw Monument was built in 1844 in tribute to the first Earl of Durham.


The Victorian Wearmouth Bridge is another famous city landmark.The first Wearmouth Bridge opened in 1796. The present bridge is the third.
