Equality State Research Network

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the Equality State Research Network?

    • The Equality State Research Network (ESRN) works closely with partners across Wyoming to develop and answer research questions that are relevant to providers, educators, patients, families, and other partners in communities. It is a statewide network that is committed to engaging in community-based learning through research to understand and improve practice. The ESRN is built on a Community Based Participatory Research Model that mixes scientific inquiry, quality improvement, and community engagement.

  • Who are network partners?

    • An ESRN partner is any entity (researcher, practice, community leader, etc.) that interacts with the network to serve the network’s goals. All partners are equal in their contribution to the ESRN and no one entity will drive the approach of the network more than another. The ESRN seeks to foster collaborative relationships between partners in order to bring a wide range of experiences and expertise to the healthcare conversation.

  • Why is the ESRN important?

    • Most clinical research in the U.S. is conducted in tertiary academic medical centers focusing on the interests of researchers and often ignoring the unique geographic and cultural identities of the population. Subjects represent 0.1% of the population who are cared for in these academic medical centers. The consequence is research that does not reflect the clinical issues seen in most rural settings. The ESRN focuses on conducting research within a community rather than on or for a community.

  • Who can be involved in the ESRN?

    • The ESRN is a multidisciplinary network focused on a variety of projects that may involve primary care, specialty care, school-based healthcare, childhood screening, and any other group that supports healthcare in Wyoming. Importantly, we also need to have community members involved in this network. Anyone in the state of Wyoming is encouraged to participate! The research options, which are unlimited, will drive the partners, who will be recruited based on the specific research topic.

  • When will the research take place?

    • After defining the research focus and recruiting research partners, a time and duration of the project will be set. This may vary from project to project based on the number of participating partners and the number of data points that can be collected by those partners.

  • Where will the research take place?

    • All research will take place in the various practices and communities who have been recruited and agree to participate. Typically, up to 30 different partners will participate in each study, which will allow the collection of a statistically valid number of data points in a short timeframe.

  • How can I participate?

    • Partners will be recruited and will sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Wyoming College of Health Sciences (UW CHS), which outlines the responsibilities of the research partner and the UW CHS. Partners will also complete a University of Wyoming Supplier Application.

  • Will I be compensated for participating in the ESRN?

    • Participation in the ESRN can be very rewarding. Partners will receive timely feedback on state-wide data, which may drive a shift in their practices. Partners may also receive monetary compensation depending on the funding available through each study.

  • How is the ESRN funded?

    • Funding for this network will be provided via the University of Wyoming College of Health Sciences and multiple grants that are focused on growing community and practice-based research in Wyoming.
