College Student Anna Roach successful in Think College Wyoming program

By Mary Hixson, Think College Wyoming Project Coordinator

The Wyoming Institute for Disabilities (WIND) implemented the Think College Wyoming strategic plan early in 2013 to give people with intellectual disability in Wyoming the choice to attend college with individualized supports. The goal was to identify potential candidates for a possible pilot to begin in the fall of 2013. Anna Roach from Sheridan, Wyoming is the first Think College Wyoming student.

In preparation for her 2013 fall semester, WIND provided technical assistance to Vocational Rehabilitation, Easter Seals, her waiver services case manager, and college administrators, faculty and staff, as well as Anna and her family. Roach participated in and successfully completed her first semester at Sheridan College in December 2013 and is currently enrolled in the spring 2014 semester.

Modeled after successful ‘program-of-one’ curriculum in other states, Roach’s person-centered Think College Wyoming plan includes work, campus and community activities.  Roach works at the Sheridan College Cafeteria, she volunteers at the senior citizens center and she plays Pickle Ball three times a week at the local YMCA. Roach is successful in the classroom with natural supports and in the community with additional supports.  Roach’s transportation is provided in part by the Wyoming Independent Living Rehabilitation transportation check program, and a service provider from the waiver program assists with her volunteer work.

In her second semester at Sheridan College, Anna is expanding her education and her friendships. She is enrolled in a new course and regularly attends Sheridan College Generals basketball games. Recently, the Lady General’s team presented her with a basketball and she is collecting team members’ autographs on it. Her family’s Christmas letter included, “Anna is officially a college student now, taking one class this semester and loving being able to flash her student ID card!”
