Project Description:
The goal of this project is to identify Wyoming children with vision problems
at an earlier age by improving the screening and referral processes leading to
more timely diagnosis and appropriate intervention. As a result of improved
screening, referral, diagnosis, and intervention, it is believed children with
vision problems will experience less developmental delay and subsequent educational
delays. The Developmental Disabilities Division and the Maternal and Child Health
Division of the Wyoming Department of Health have been working with WIND, the
Developmental Preschool and Day Care, Child Development Services of Wyoming, and
Wyoming Lions Clubs to train personnel throughout Wyoming to use specific vision
screening tools including the Photoscreener®. The project is establishing a
photo interpretation center at UW, and developing a data system to assure that
children referred receive a comprehensive vision examination and appropriate intervention.
