Project History

The U.S. Department of Justice's Office for Victims of Crime (OVC), the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) and the Wyoming INstitute for Disabilities (WIND) have worked to create a comprehensive resource for information dealing with victims of crime with disabilities with the key mission of bridging the information gap between victim assistance and disability professionals.

Initially, the goal of the project was to develop a hard copy resource guide containing annotated descriptions of training programs and products focusing on victims of crime with disabilities. As the project developed and advances in web technology were made, an electronic format was adopted and the decision was made to provide an online web site with access to the resource guide via a searchable database.

The second phase of the project consisted of identification of potential training products and programs to be entered into the database. Training items extending to other disciplines (e.g., law enforcement, judicial personnel, health care providers, etc.) were included in this initial wave of entries and more than 200 items were identified and subsequently added to the resource guide. Additionally, the main database providing this service was revised to expand the search capabilities of the Resource Guide.

In 2003, the U.S. Department of Justice's Office for Victims of Crime provided funds for further expanding the Resource Guide. The grant was designed to continue the support of the existing resources database and develop several new services. A monthly newsletter, online calendar, listing of funding opportunities, and discussion lists have now been added to this web site as a result of this support.
