Administrator Program Description
Back to Participant Information
WCMA participants will complete the certificate program as a triad team of one mentee (in-service certified general educators seeking special education certification), one mentor (in-service certified special educators seeking special education collaborative mentor certification) and one administrator (in-service or pre-service administrators seeking administrative special education collaborative mentor certification). Mentees, mentors and administrators will follow a course progression specific to their certificate during the program and will also work collaboratively on selected course assignments. If administrators apply to WCMA but their building mentee and/or mentor do not wish to participate in the program, a mentee and/or mentor will be assigned for them.
The administrator course work is specifically designed to support the administrator in gaining a better understanding of their role and responsibility in serving students with special needs in a collaborative inclusive environment. Therefore, the administrator classes are a total of 9 credit hours and focus primarily on facilitating collaboration, special education process and procedures, special education law and program evaluation. The administrators program is delivered over a one and a half year period (three semesters and two summer institutes) to correlate with similar classes for the mentor and mentee. After completion of WCMA, administrators will receive a "University of Wyoming Graduate Certificate as an Administrative Special Education Collaborative Mentor."
Currently the University of Wyomings Educational Leadership program is working with the Professional Teaching Standards Board (PTSB) to create Special Education Director Certification for administrators and/or educators. Completion of the WCMA administrator course work will potentially satisfy the Special Education Director Certification requirements. The Special Education Director Certification requirements are still pending at this time. Any administrators accepted into the WCMA program will be notified as soon as Educational Leadership and PTSB have confirmed the certification details and requirements.
