Mentee Program Description

Back to Participant Information

WCMA participants will complete the certificate program as a triad team of one mentee (in-service certified general educators seeking special education certification), one mentor (in-service certified special educators seeking special education collaborative mentor certification) and one administrator (in-service or pre-service administrators seeking administrative special education collaborative mentor certification). Mentees, mentors and administrators will follow a course progression specific to their certificate during the program and will also work collaboratively on selected course assignments.

The course work for the mentees seeking certification is the same course work delivered on campus with the added advantage of distance delivery, extended collaborative field relationships and opportunities for authentic application and reflection given the field-based learning environment.

The courses will be delivered over a two and one quarter year period (four semesters and three summers) for a total of 32 graduate semester credits for the mentee participant seeking certification. The last summer term of the program will require 3 weeks of on campus attendance. Each of the courses meets the Professional Teaching Standards Board (PTSB) standards and requirements for certification in special education. Upon completion of the WCMA course work, the mentee participant can apply to PTSB for an institutional recommendation from the University of Wyoming for state certification. Mentees will also receive a "University of Wyoming Graduate Certificate as a Collaborative Special Educator."

Additionally, mentees will also have the option of applying the 32 graduate credits toward a master of arts with an option in special education. Mentees seeking the Master of Arts degree will need to apply to the Department of Special Education program. Each mentee accepted into WCMA will receive information regarding the degree program and application process.
