Mentor Program Description

Back to Participant Information

WCMA participants will complete the certificate program as a triad team of one mentee (in-service certified general educators seeking special education certification), one mentor (in-service certified special educators seeking special education collaborative mentor certification) and one administrator (in-service or pre-service administrators seeking administrative special education collaborative mentor certification). Mentees, mentors and administrators will follow a course progression specific to their certificate during the program and will also work collaboratively on selected course assignments. If mentors apply to WCMA but their mentee and/or building administrator do not wish to participate in the program, a mentee and/or administrator will be assigned for them.

The mentor teacher will take 12 credit hours (four semesters and two summer institutes) of courses that focus on renewal of pedagogy, professional teaching standards, and collaboration with general education colleagues as well as execution and evaluation of the mentoring process. The mentor course work is spread out over a two-year period to correspond with the mentee training and expectations. Upon completion of the program, the mentor will receive a University of Wyoming Graduate Certificate as a Special Education Collaborative Mentor.

Additionally, mentors will have the option of applying the 12 graduate credits toward a Master of Arts Curriculum and Instruction degree or a Master of Arts Curriculum and Instruction with an Emphasis in Teaching and Learning degree. Mentors seeking the Master of Arts degree will need to apply to the College of Education program. Each mentor accepted into WCMA will receive information regarding the degree program and application process.
