Celebration Chuckles
Sharing comic strips that humorously make statements about eating, physical
activity and body image is a common interest of many of us with shared interests
in WIN the Rockies and WIN Wyoming. A discovery I painfully made several years
ago about humor is this - what is funny to one person is offensive to another. I
send the following quotes your way in the hopes that at least one causes you to
chuckle.
Humor helps me lighten my load and reminds me of the great joy life can
bring. So, here’s to a guilt-free early summer day filled with celebrating
healthful, pleasurable eating and enjoyable physical activity! Why not take a
moment today and marvel at the diversity wonders of human beings?
- From a Frank and Ernest comic strip as the two friends pass a doughnut
shop: "I try to fight my impulses, but they keep asking for
rematches." - April 29, 2002
- From a Frank and Ernest comic strip with a gym "personal
trainer" giving the finer points of weight lifting. When the personal
trainer says "Ok, now tell your muscles to pick it up." The
overwhelmed person responds with "Sure, but first you tell gravity to
let go." - February 1, 2002.
- From the Born Loser comic strip with Brutus lounging on his easy chair.
His wife comments that "runners wear running shoes, golfers wear golf
shoes, and boaters wear boating shoes." So what type of shoes is Brutus
wearing? "Loafers!" - May 21, 2001
- From Crabby Road comic strip with Maxine in her morning robe moving the
weight on the scale further and further to the right. Instead of obsessing
about the extra pounds the scale reveals, Maxine comments: "That’s
odd. The paper didn’t say there’d be extra gravity today." -
December 10, 2001. (On a side note, Crabby Road is my all-time favorite
comic strip. Some of her quirky observations make me think some days she
follows me around and records my thoughts and then reports them the next day
in her comic strip.)
- From Frank and Earnest with one of the pals at the doctor’s office. With
a very forlorn look the patient tells the doctor "I feel like I just
passed by ‘Best if used by’ date." - June 21, 2001
- From Crabby Road with Maxine looking at her reflection in a hand-held
mirror - "I don’t iron. If I’m not wrinkle-free, why should my
clothes be?" February 15, 2001
- Jeff Foxworthy’s daily calendar indicates some people think "eating
right" means using a fork and knife. - April 26, 2002
- And finally – the all time favorite comic strip from the WIN the Rockies
office - a SIX CHIX comic with Mom diligently working on a lap top computer
and the very young toddler with baby bottle and blocks looking up from play
and asking her mother "Does this diaper make me look fat?" The
comic is prefaced with the statement "A sign the media is influencing
girls at a younger and younger age." - April 13, 2001
