V. PATHWAYS TO PREGNANCY AND BIRTH

Maturation of male and female gametes was discussed independently in the preceding two chapters. It is time now to unite these cells, and then to appraise succeeding mechanisms of pregnancy and parturition. The lactational phase constitutes the final event of the female reproductive cycle. The last order of business will be to consider the development of the offspring to a stage (puberty) at which it can assume an obligation for species multiplication.
