Learning to Learn

Growing as a learner

A vital part of success at college is learning to learn.  Growing as a learner includes cultivating:

  • Soft skills
  • A growth mindset
  • Grit

Soft skills

  • College is more than just reading textbooks and writing papers, it also helps you cultivate your soft skills. What are they?
    • attitude
    • time management
    • effective communication
    • creativity/problem solving
    • passion
  • These skills will help you every aspect of your life, not just college.
  • For a short introduction on soft skills, read "The Two Key Traits Employers Need from Today's College Graduates" (May 28, 2014).

Growth mindset

  • What are your thoughts about learning?  Is intelligence intrinsic (a fixed mindset), or something you can increase through work (a growth mindset)?  Studies have found a strong correlation between what you believe about learning and what you can achieve.
  • Cultivating a growth mindset about learning will help you be more successful in college and beyond.
  • Learn more about growth mindset in the short video, "Fixed Mindset vs. Growth Mindset", published by BryanID Team (3.35 minutes).
  • Find more information and strategies to cultivate a growth mindset by Googling Carol Dweck.

The importance of grit

  • A strong start in college is important, but perseverance and passion, or what education researcher Angela Duckworth calls grit,  are even more important. College is challenging and intense, and being able to dig deep and persevere through challenges is  vital.

  • Listen to UW freshmen Stephen Holt's experience with pushing through in his Stay Strong video.

  • Part of cultivating grit and being successful is learned optimism, and idea developed by psychologist Martin Seligman. Check out this short video, "Learned Optimism by Martin Seligman," published by FightMediocrity (4:44 minutes).
