Time Management
Time management, essential for success
Managing your time in college is essential for success. While it might seem like you have a lot of "free time" on your hands, that out-of-class time is essential for success in college, and fills up quickly. Success in time management includes:
- Setting goals
- Scheduling your time
Setting goals
- Goals tell you where you want to go, and help define what is success for you.
- At college, some goals are built in ("I want to pass my English 1010 class"), but it's good to recognize them and make them your own.
- While goals tell you where you want to go, success comes from achieving those goals. To do so, break down your goals into smaller, manageable steps instead of being overwhelmed.
Scheduling your time
- Scheduling your time is vital to time management. There are only 168 hours in a week, and they fill up fast. Know how much time it will take you to do certain tasks, and how much you have available.
- Using a day planner is key to success in college. It will help you keep track of all you need to do, and how much time you have to do it.
- Part of scheduling your time is knowing where to work. Minimizing distractions (like social media, phones, and friends) makes your work time more effective. On college campuses, instructors often recommend studying in the library.
