STEM Entrepreneurship and the Arts

With assistance from the Wyoming Arts Council, the Wyoming Technology Business Center (WTBC) is exploring the connections between STEM Entrepreneurs and the arts. In many cities across the United States and Canada, there is a demonstrated link between thriving tech sectors and thriving arts sectors. As the WTBC’s clients and graduates move out of our incubators and into our communities, it becomes important to these companies to have a lively cultural sector to help them with employee recruitment and retention. The WTBC has launched two separate pilot programs to focus on visual and performing artists. These pilot programs use the same methodology that our tech clients experience, and while early in the investigation, they are showing promising results.

Visual Arts:

The WTBC is working with five Laramie based visual artists, with one of these artists working within the incubator on a full time basis. Work with these visual artists explores increasing their sales channels, developing skills that allow them to effectively utilize social media, networking, and developing fundamental business management skills. Because our artists will have more success with the high-quality work they are passionate about, artistic integrity is paramount to the efforts of the WTBC artists, and as such WTBC staff do not direct content and creation of individual artists work. The Visual Arts Incubation program is supported in part by a grant from the Wyoming Arts Council.

Performing Arts:

In the spring of 2016 the WTBC and the Wyoming Arts Council came together to develop an accelerated incubation program for ten Laramie based bands called the Wyoming Independent Music Initiative (WIMI). WIMI is a pilot program that walks each of these ten bands through an intense series of meetings to give them some basic tools and skills which are individualized to each bands needs. The WIMI partnership quickly grew to include Wyoming Public Radio & Media, BendeRuble Sound, Square State Film, Laramie’s Gryphon Theatre, and WTBC Visual Arts client BHP Imaging. The final act of the inaugural WIMI cohort is a community showcase on July 25th.
