June 14, 2007 -- Wayne Hubert, University of Wyoming professor of zoology and physiology and leader of the Wyoming Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, has been honored three times recently with awards recognizing his contributions to fisheries science.
The American Fisheries Society inducted Hubert as the 17th member of its National Fisheries Hall of Excellence. The Hall of Excellence was established in 1992 to recognize fisheries science professionals who have made outstanding contributions to the area of fisheries management.
The Western Division of the AFS gave him its top honor, the Award of Excellence, which recognizes sustained professional excellence. It is given annually to an AFS member who has "demonstrated outstanding achievement and exceptional competence in fishery resource applications through monumental works, new methodologies, or multiple successful contributions that benefit our resources and profession."
And the Wyoming Game and Fish Department honored him with its Excellence in Conservation Award. The citation recognized Hubert's "untiring enthusiasm for working with staff at the department to design research projects, and for providing sound guidance to students through the completion of those projects."
"To be recognized in such ways by my peers is an honor beyond my wildest imagination," Hubert says. "The American Fisheries Society is the only professional society representing fisheries scientists throughout North America, with a membership of around 12,000."
Hubert's research in fisheries management and fish ecology has contributed to native fish restoration and better sport fishing in the Rocky Mountain and Great Plains regions.
He and his students and colleagues have published more than 250 peer-reviewed publications and hundreds of agency reports. He has co-edited several American Fisheries Society books, including "Inland Fishers Management in North America," and was both editor and associate editor of the North American Journal of Fisheries Management.
