As a Master's candidate in Anthropology (archaeology), I was thrilled to receive the RMGITA scholarship this fall. As the study of describing and explaining past human variation, archaeology requires a dedication to interdisciplinary research. It is my opinion that archaeologists often under-utilize GIS, treating it as a simple container of maps and not as a tool to answer questions. My current projects at the University of Wyoming are aimed at integrating GIS research methods into conducting anthropological and archaeological research. The RMGITA scholarship has helped pay for my tuition, allowing me to continue my GIS studies this semester and culminating my University of Wyoming GIS experience in the geography department's Spatial Modeling class. It has additionally allowed me to dedicate a great deal of time and effort to a research project using ArcGIS and extinction theory to investigate a large and controversial question in Paleoindian archaeology: were the extinctions at the end of the Pleistocene caused by climate change or human overkill? This paper, "Range sizes and shifts of North American Pleistocene mammals are not consistent with a climatic explanation for extinction" is now in press in World Archaeology. Finally, the scholarship has allowed me to dedicate more time to being a teaching assistant for GIS in Anthropology this semester. My sincerest appreciation goes out to RMGITA for choosing me to receive this award!
