Project Description:

The overall objective in developing the WPLI story map platform is to utilize an easy-to-access Web mapping framework to present qualitative and quantitative information supporting public engagement and education on Wilderness Study Areas (WSAs) currently under review across nine Wyoming counties. WyGISC was contracted by the Wyoming County Commissioners Association (WCCA) to develop the application.

WyGISC will implement a WPLI-specific Web mapping platform utilizing ESRI’s story map development framework. The platform will be developed and hosted on a WyGISC instance of ESRI’s ArcGIS Online deployed on WyGISC’s internal IT infrastructure at the University of Wyoming Data Center. This approach will entail downloading story map templates as JavaScript code, and installing and running applications from a local server configuration. The vision is to implement a total of approximately 31 story map products for the following geographic entities: one statewide overview; nine county summaries; 18 BLM WSAs; and three USFS WSAs. They will be integrated such that the user experience affords a relatively seamless transition between geographic / jurisdictional levels (from state, to county, to individual WSA and back).

The advantages with this solution are that ongoing updates can be managed in a seamless and scalable manner, and that user roles (i.e., for WCCA staff and stakeholder participants) can be managed more effectively. However, the solution does represent a new category of platform development for WyGISC and the possibility exists for technical challenges in achieving a 100% error-free environment in the initial release. Given the project’s very short timeline for initial application deployment, WyGISC will also support an alternative deployment strategy on the University of Wyoming’s ArcGIS Online institutional site in the event that delays are experienced with the internal server solution.
