AES GIS Data Automation, Access and Application Development

UW Agricultural Experiment Station Research and Extension Centers

Project Dates:

Phase I:  1 October 2010 -  30 September 2011

Phase II: 1 October 2011 -  30 September 2012

Funding Sponsor:

Hatch Act

Principal Investigator: Wendy L. Berelson, Doug Zalesky

Project Description:

Phase I: GIS Data Access, James C. Hageman Sustainable Agricultural Research & Extension Center (SAREC)

The Wyoming Geographic Information Science Center (WyGISC) at the University of Wyoming (UW) has entered into a partnership with UW’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resource’s Agricultural Experiment Station. This partnership was created to enable access to existing GIS data collected for the Sustainable Agricultural Research Extension Center (SAREC) for the purpose of facilitating science and management activities at the facility.  Access to existing data will be provided to SAREC researchers and administrators via a secure data portal via the Web.  This will aid in answering questions regarding current and historical field data as well as facilitate future field planning. The GIS database implementation and data access provided to SAREC researchers will serve as a demonstration project that can be applied to other UW Research and Extension Centers in the future. This project also helps meet the goals of UP3 and WyGISC to foster and support collaborative science across a wide range of disciplinary domains.

Phase II: AES GIS Application Enhancement and Data Automation for Research Stations at Powell, Laramie, and Sheridan, Wyoming

The Wyoming Geographic Information Science Center (WyGISC) at the University of Wyoming (UW) entered into a partnership with UW’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resource’s Agricultural Experiment Station in FY2011. Through this partnership a GIS application was created to enable access to existing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data collected for the James C. Hageman Sustainable Agricultural Research Extension Center (SAREC) for the purpose of facilitating science and management activities at the facility. Delivered via secure web portal the application allows researchers to view and query historical field data for SAREC and aids in future field planning. Phase I served as a demonstration project and with its successful completion WyGISC efforts continue with additional work in Phase II.

Phase II of this project will involve enhancing the application to facilitate field location selection for the upcoming field season. Functionality similar to that used for the SAREC application will be implemented for the experiment stations at Powell, Sheridan and Laramie to the extent possible based on data availability. Data will be added for agricultural facilities at applicable stations. In addition, data for horticulture facilities in Sheridan and livestock and animal facilities in Laramie will be added.
