Data Sensitivity

The word sensitive has two different applications that should not be confused:
  1. Sensitive records refer to observation records that include sensitive data.

The location of sensitive records is "fuzzed" by expressing the location as the township within which the record was observed. Most text attributes of sensitive records are withheld. Sensitive data falls into three categories:

    • Private Land – (non-negotiable sensitivity) records on private land are sensitive, except when:
      • the information is available elsewhere in the public sphere (i.e., museum, herbarium, published works, etc.)
      • the data were collected from a public space (i.e., public road, right-of-way, from aircraft, etc.)
    • Biological (sensitivity may be lifted with permission from WYNDD biologists) – raptor nests, hibernacula, Threatened and Endangered plants, etc. are sensitive
    • Data Donor (sensitivity may be lifted with permission from donor) – the donor of the record requests that it be treated as sensitive - all Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD) records are sensitive and require permission to distribute as precise, unfuzzed records
To obtain permission to receive precise, unfuzzed information for sensitivity-negotiable records:
    • Permission for precise locations and attributes of Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD) records can be obtained by emailing and requesting that they copy our Data Coordinator ( in their response.
    • Permission for precise locations and attributes of biologically sensitive records can be obtained by filling out this form and receiving permission from WYNDD biologists.
  2. Sensitive species is a loose term that refers to species with a conservation rank or status:
