Observation Mapping

For generalized records of individual taxa, use the WYNDD Data Explorer.

For detailed observation records:

  1. Determine if you need precise data for WGFD records - there has been a change in policy on how WYNDD is allowed to express Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD) records. To find out how to get permission for precise locations of WGFD records, check out our data sensitivity page. If you find out that you need permission for WGFD records after after a request has been filled, a fee will be assessed for follow-up requests for precise information.
  2. Email Melanie Arnett with the specifics of your project (including a shapefile, if possible).

Fee Schedule for requests manually filled by WYNDD
WYNDD's primary mission is to maintain a statewide database of spatial and biological information on rare species and important plant communities, and disseminate data to interested parties. State funding covers a portion of the costs associated with this mission, therefore state agencies, including the University of Wyoming, are exempt from paying fees. Monies generated through data request fees and outside contracts are used to cover the remaining costs.

Area-based requests: all Species of Concern (SOC) and Species of Potential Concern (SOPC) included in request, fee based on number of townships intersected by request area. Please be aware that all Wyoming Game and Fish Department records are considered "sensitive" and we will only distribute the township of occurrence, species name, and date of observation unless permission is obtained.

One township: $110.00
Each additional township intersected by the request area will add $10.00 to the base fee

1 township = $110.00
2 townships = $120.00
3 townships = $130.00
Up to a maximum of $10,000 (roughly 1000 townships, or about a third of the state)

Species-based requests: requests for specific species should use the following formula for calculating the fee

Number of Townships x Number of Taxa (for statewide requests use 2800 as the number of townships)

  • Tier 1 - if the number of taxa x the number of townships is less than 6251 then the fee = $110.00
  • Tier 2 -if the number of taxa x the number of townships is between 6250 and 62500 then multiply that product by 0.030 for fee (e.g. 25 taxa X 1000 townships = 25,000, multiplied by 0.030 = $750.00)
  • Tier 3 -if the number of taxa x the number of townships is greater than 62500 then multiply by 0.0495 for fee, up to $10,000

WYNDD will not fill data requests for persons/organizations with overdue payments.
