Educational Services

The Wyoming Natural Diversity Database offers field-training, workshops and organized conferences on Threatened, Endangered, and sensitive species. If you have a specific need, contact Ian Abernethy (vertebreate zoology), Dr. Lusha Tronstad (invertebrate zoology), Bonnie Heidel (botany), or Dr. George Jones (vegetation ecology).

In addition, WYNDD offers 1-2 day (or more) classes in range plant identification, tailored to your needs. If you have a specific species list or region, habitat, or research interest we can work with you to put together a lesson plan. Sight recognition and field characteristics may be the complete focus, or some plant keying may be included if desired. Contact Joy Handley.

Past range- and wildlife habitat-related classes have included:

  • Common sagebrush plant associates in Wyoming, including forms and habits
  • Sage grouse food and cover plants, including illustrated booklet with species descriptions
  • Shrub species associated with Wyoming pocket gopher habitat, including illustrated booklet with species descriptions

WYNDD staff scientists also often conduct seminars, field trips, guest lectures, and other technical training sessions involving the biota of Wyoming and the region. Some of these services are provided free of charge; those requiring substantial preparation time or travel may require a fee. Cost will be decided on a case-by-case basis by WYNDD.

Additionally, there are opportunities for people to assist with WYNDD projects or develop projects of their own at WYNDD through internships, independent studies, and volunteer positions. WYNDD provides these services for free.

Interested parties should contact WYNDD staff directly to discuss details.
