Federal Prevention Block Grant

The Federal Prevention Block Grant provides funding to 15 separate mental health providers across the state to implement prevention programs and practices in all 23 counties. WYSAC plays an important role not only as the state-wide evaluator of the Prevention Block Grant but also as a member of the management team that oversees the project. WYSAC has trained each provider to gather and report evaluation data as well as bringing providers up to date with new Federal requirements for prevention evaluation. Program and community processes and outcomes are gathered through quarterly reporting, process information reporting, and sometimes the pre and post-test surveying of youth. Over the past couple of years these efforts have moved Block Grant providers to an increased used of evidence-based practices that reduce risk factors and increase protective factors. Block Grant providers work closely with community coalitions created through the 21st Century State Incentive Grant project and have served over 13,000 youth and adults in the past year. State level evaluation results show that youth served by Block Grant programs have experienced statistically significant decreases two important risk factors – attitude toward drug use and a perceived risk or harm of drug use.
