By Katrina Clymer, Academic Advising Professional

Wow, all of your hard work has paid off! You did it, you landed that interview! Congratulations are definitely in order but your joyful feelings may soon be clouded by a touch of anxiety and questions about what will happen next. There are a few things you should consider before, during, and after the interview. Here are a some tips to help ensure you impress in the interview and get the job!

BEFORE

  • Do you research and get to know the organization you might work for – it makes you look eager, intelligent, and you will stand out to the interviewing committee!
  • This may seem like a no-brainer, but study the job description. Know what the employer is looking for and how your skill set will work for them.
  • Set up a mock interview with your advisor or a career services staff member – it helps to stumble a little over the tough questions with someone who can advise you!
DURING
  • Arrive early! This will give you the opportunity to get the lay of the land and review any notes you may have taken.
  • Turn off your cell phone!
  • Shake hands with each member of the interviewing committee.
  • Make eye contact with everyone and remember to smile.
  • Remember that research you did about the company? It is very common practice for the interviewing committee to ask you if you have any questions for them so being prepared for this one will pay off!
AFTER
  • Follow up with a thank you note. A handwritten note is always best but an email will also do the trick.
  • Mail your thank you note within 24 hours of your interview.
